STRUCTURE OF EYEBALL (ANATOMY)

                   Human Eyeball Structure

Eyeball parts name-
  1. Cornea
  2. Conjunctiva
  3. Iris
  4. Pupil
  5. Crystalline lens (natural lens)
  6. Zonules (suspensory ligament)
  7. Ciliary body
  8. Limbus
  9. Canal of Schlemm
  10. Ora serrata
  11. Sclera
  12. Choroid
  13. Retina
  14. Macula lutia (fovea)
  15. Optic disc
  16. Optic nerve

Dimensions of adult Eyeball-

  • Anteroposterior diameter.               24mm
  • Horizontal diameter.                         23.5mm
  • Vertical diameter.                               23mm
  • Circumference.                                    75mm
  • Volume.                                                 6.5ml
  • Weight.                                                  7gm

Coats of the Eyeball-

  1. Fibrous coat - Sclera, Cornea, Limbus (Junction of the cornea & sclera), Conjunctiva (firmly attached at the limbus)
  2. Vascular coat (uveal tissue) - It consists of three parts,  from anterior to posterior,  which are : Iris,  Ciliary body & Choroid.
  3. Nervous coat (Retina) - It is concerned with visual function.

Segments & Chambers of the Eyeball-

The eyeball can be divided into two segments : Anterior & Posterior

1. Anterior segments -
  • Anterior chamber - back of cornea, anterior of iris. The anterior chamber is about 2.5mm deep in the centre in normal adults. It contains about 0.25ml of the aqueous humour.
  •  Posterior chamber - back part of iris & part of ciliary body,  anterior part of crystalline lens & it's zonules.
2. Posterior segments -
posterior part of lens, vitreous humour (a gel like material which fills the space behind the lens), retina,  choroid & optic disc.
